The Gastrointestinal (GI) Center diagnoses, treats, and manages tumors of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts. Particular attention is directed toward developing innovative therapies and diagnostic approaches.

One of the most common cancers of the gastrointestinal area is colorectal cancer, a disease that can be cured if detected early and prevented if pre-malignant polyps are removed through a colonoscopy.

For those diagnosed with colorectal cancer, Roswell Park offers the most advanced treatment options not only to eradicate the disease, but also to preserve patients’ ability to function normally.

Our surgeons have developed new techniques that preserve bowel, bladder and sexual function. These treatment advances have reduced the number of patients requiring a permanent colostomy after rectal surgery.
