The Gastrointestinal Program
Roswell Park Cancer Institute provides comprehensive, individualized gastrointestinal and colorectal cancer care for about 700 inpatient admissions and over 15,000 outpatient visits annually, including an influx of almost 1,000 new patients. There are about 5,100 cases of colon cancer diagnosed annually in New York State, with about 770 cases from the Western New York region, and there are about 1,900 cases of rectum or rectosigmoid cancer diagnosed annually in New York State, with about 300 cases from the Western New York Region.

This section provides data on colorectal cancer patients treated at RPCI, the characteristics of their disease and their treatment. It is important to recognize that the characteristics of patients who come to a cancer center may differ somewhat from those of patients who do not.

Family History

Stage at Diagnosis

Compared to the national average, a significantly higher proportion of patients present at RPCI with Stages III and IV disease. This reflects the fact that RPCI is a regional resource for patients with more advanced and complex cancers. The Stage IV presentation of patients is primarily due to colorectal liver metastasis.

Age at Diagnosis

The average age range of patients with colorectal cancer in the United States is 60-79. RPCI diagnoses a larger proportion of younger patients due to the early recognition and management of familial or hereditary colorectal cancer predisposition.
