Colon and Rectal Cancer

Colon and rectal cancers, grouped together and often referred to as colorectal cancer, are the fourth most common cancers in the United States among both men and women. At Roswell Park, our colorectal cancer experts believe every patient is unique, and we approach cancer treatment on an individual and personal basis, treating the whole person, not just the cancer.

Colon Cancer Survivor: Joanne

Setting the National Standards

Our experts serve on boards of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) to create guidelines that specify the best ways of preventing, detecting, and treating specific types of cancer. The NCCN guidelines for colon cancer are the most widely used standards for cancer care.

Instant Access Appointments

Patients with suspected or newly-diagnosed colorectal cancer may have an initial evaluation within 24 hours. A team member will meet with you to outline further diagnostics, treatment or need for evaluation by the multidisciplinary team.

Our Pathologists are Game Changers

Our pathology department tests each patient’s colorectal cancer sample for the presence or absence of specific genetic mutations or unique characteristics. This information allows the colorectal team to determine whether a specific patient would benefit from a specific drug or therapy, sparing others from undergoing treatments unlikely to help them.
