RPCI survival data are compared to National Cancer Institute SEER program data, and to quality measures from the National Cancer Data Base of the Commission on Cancer. The survival data for breast cancer show that RPCI patients fare at least as well as, or better than, the national average when compared by cancer stage.

Comparative Quality Measures
Quality measures reviewed on every patient include specific measures approved by the National Quality Forum, and measures developed from the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines. However, as with all quality measures, it is expected, for many reasons (e.g., patient preference, medical contraindications), that concordance with a measure will NEVER be 100%.

Comparison of Estimated Performance Rates for Breast Cancer Diagnosed in 2008
The performance rates below have been computed based on data directly reported from RPCI’s Cancer Registry, and are compared to national benchmarks. Once again, the care of RPCI patients who did not receive treatment was carefully reviewed. Most notable is the second table showing chemotherapy in hormone receptor negative cancer. These cases were nonconcordant for two reasons: a few patients decided not to undergo chemotherapy because of personal and medical reasons; and a number received treatment, but just a few days outside the 120 day time window stipulated in the measure.

The estimated performance rates for the groups compare the proportion of women under age 70 who received adjuvant radiation therapy within one year of breast-conserving surgery.

Combination chemotherapy is considered or administered within 4 months (120 days) of diagnosis for women under 70 with AJCC T1cN0M0, or Stage II or III hormone receptor negative breast cancer.

Third Generation Aromatase

Tamoxifen or third generation aromatase inhibitor is considered or administered within 1 year (365 days) of diagnosis for women with AJCC T1cN0M0, or Stage II or III hormone receptor positive breast cancer.
