Roswell Park Participates participates in a number of national quality and patient safety initiatives.
Commission on Cancer
Established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) in 1922, the multidisciplinary Comission on Cancer establishes standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings; conducts surveys in health care settings to assess compliance with those standards; collects standardized data from CoC-accredited health care settings to measure cancer care quality; uses data to monitor treatment patterns and outcomes and enhance cancer control and clinical surveillance activities, and develops effective educational interventions to improve cancer prevention, early detection, cancer care delivery, and outcomes in health care settings.
Joint Commission
The Joint Commission has a longstanding commitment to providing meaningful information about the comparative performance of accredited organizations to the public. The Joint Commission publishes organization-specific Performance Reports. To earn and maintain The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years. (Laboratories must be surveyed every two years.) Roswell Park had an unannounced survey in the Fall of 2006 and maintains full accreditation with the Gold Seal of Approval. Leapfrog
Roswell participates in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Leapfrog's initiatives offer valuable benchmarking capabilities to hospitals and provide consumers and purchasers of health care with information they want on the quality and safety of their hospitals. The Survey assesses hospital performance based on four quality and safety practices that are proven to reduce preventable medical mistakes and are endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF). National Cancer Institute
National Cancer Institute designated cancer centers are characterized by scientific excellence and the capability to integrate a diversity of research approaches to focus on the problem of cancer. They play a vital role in advancing towards our goal of reducing morbidity and mortality from cancer.
Since 1971 Roswell Park has been recognized by the NCI as a comprehensive cancer center. It was the nation's first, has served as a national model and is the only NCI hospital in upstate New York.
VHA, Inc.
Roswell is involved in the Transformation of the ICU (TICU) and Transformation of the Operating Room (TOR) clinical performance improvement projects. Intensive care units (ICUs) have the highest incidence of HAIs. Participants in VHA's Transformation of the Intensive Care Unit (TICU) program dramatically have decreased their incidence of HAIs and changed the way they deliver care. The program provides participants with the tools and methodologies, training and guidance, and measurement necessary to transform their ICU care. Read more about VHA infection initiatives here.
National Comprehensive Cancer Network
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is a not-for-profit alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers. Experts from NCCN Member Institutions diagnose and treat all cancers, particularly complex, aggressive or uncommon cancers. More than 160,000 new patients receive cancer care at NCCN Member Institutions over the course of each year. Thirty-eight Nobel Prize winners have served on the faculties of NCCN Member Institutions. Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy
The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy has accredited RPCI. FACT accredited Cellular Therapy programs have demonstrated compliance with the current FACT Cellular Therapy Standards. The accreditation process involves the submission of documentation to demonstrate compliance with the standards and a subsequent on-site inspection conducted by inspectors qualified by training and experience in cellular therapy. Accredited programs have met rigorous standards, as defined by the leading experts in the field, and based on the latest knowledge of the field of cellular therapy product transplantation and in compliance with governmental regulations.
Magnet Recognition
Nurses at Roswell Park Cancer Institute are striving to earn designation as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the nation’s largest nursing accrediting and credentialing organization. The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize health care organizations that provide nursing excellence.
