Dr. Thompson joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 2009, as an Assistant Professor of Oncology in the Department of Medicine and Assistant Member in the Department of Immunology. Dr. Thompson's clinical practice focuses on acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in the elderly, the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and related anemias of the elderly.
Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from Columbia University, New York, NY in 1997, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed both residency training in internal medicine in 2000 and a fellowship in hematology and oncology in 2003 at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Thompson holds specialty certification in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, Mitochondrial Research Society, and others.
Dr. Thompson’s research interests focus on the etiology of MDS and unexplained anemia (UA) of aging, the role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in immunosenescence, and the role of mtDNA mutations in the development of MDS and UA.
Dr. Thompson has been invited to lecture at the University of Massachusetts, the University of Rochester, the International Symposium on Myelodysplastic Syndromes (Florence, Italy), and the American Society of Hematology. He has authored or co-authored more than 15 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts.
