ProfileDr. John L. Pauly joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1970 as a pre-doctoral fellow sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1972 he received a Ph.D. in Physiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY/AB). In 1972 he joined the Department of Medicine and was appointed Senior Cancer Research Scientist. From 1977 to 1979 he served as an Associate Member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Lausanne, Switzerland. Thereafter, he returned to RPCI and joined the Department of Immunology where he holds the position of a Cancer Research Scientist V.
Dr. Pauly holds the rank of Associate Member at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and is an Associate Professor of Oncology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has authored over 70 scientific papers on diverse topics that include: characterization of immunoregulatory molecules, high-resolution imaging of surface membrane receptors, identification of different inhaled fibers and particles in the human lung, and characterization of fluorescent lung macrophages (“smoker cells”) using fresh surgically excised human lung tissue.
Dr. Pauly has also published papers on cigarette design, particularly the filter. He has identified the third phase of cigarette smoke that includes non-pyrolysis products present in mainstream smoke. He has characterized the release of fibers and particles from the filters and seeks to define the potential health risks associated with the inhalation of these items. Dr. Pauly also has an active interest in identifying microbes present on raw tobacco used in smoking and smokeless products and the potential risks associated with these agents and diverse microbial toxins. In addition, Dr. Pauly has served as an expert in different forums addressing tobacco policy.
