INTRODUCTION
In recent years, innovative medical technologies have changed the practice of medicine. In the discipline of surgery, robotic surgical systems have allowed an ever-increasing number of patients to benefit from minimally invasive surgery (MIS). MIS has been adopted widely for many surgical procedures and has resulted in better surgical results, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, fewer complications and reduced hospitalization costs. Intuitive Surgical’s state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology, the da Vinci Surgical System,® enables surgeons to perform complex surgeries using a minimally invasive approach.
The widespread adoption of MIS for complex procedures has been delayed because of its dependence upon a highly skilled, well-coordinated team. MIS surgeons experience steep learning curves that become steeper if the operating room technicians, nursing staff, physician assistants, assisting surgeons, fellows and resident physicians are not trained appropriately. The need for extensive team-based training will be met at the Roswell Park Center for Robotic Surgery. The need for extensive team-based training will be met at the Roswell Park Center for Robotic Surgery. This Center is funded through the leadership support of the John R. Oishei Foundation with additional support from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation and the James H. Cummings Foundation.
NEED
RPCI has created two programs–one to assist robotic prostatectomy teams and one to facillitate the introduction of robot assisted radical cystectomy. Both programs follow a structured approach over five days, divided into two phases. The first phase is conducted at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the second phase is conducted at the home institution.
Many urologic surgeons have been trained to perform da Vinci radical prostatectomies and their hospitals have purchased the da Vinci Surgical System.® Some of these surgeons/hospitals have found their programs unsuccessful for a variety of reasons. Many robotic surgeons who are having difficulty could become successful providing an opportunity existed for further training of the surgical team. This course has been designed specifically for surgeons and their teams who have identified a need for additional team training in order to make their robotic prostatectomy programs successful. Many surgeons who have been successful in establishing the robotic prostatectomy program and are preparing to establish a robotic cystectomy program would also benefit from the course.
