2009 Gilda Radner Courage Award Honoree
Former Raiders defensive back Mike Haynes will share his message of early detection and advocacy
Cornerback Mike Haynes had an exceptional career playing for the New England Patriots and later, taking the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl. His skills on the field led him to the Hall of Fame and, through a twist of fate, to a diagnosis of prostate cancer that likely saved his life.
Haynes was screened for prostate cancer as part of a prevention program aimed at retired players in 2008. Thanks to that test, his cancer was caught early. Now, Haynes has turned his attention off the field as a prostate cancer advocate for the American Urological Association Foundation, speaking to men across the country about the importance of early detection.
Haynes brought that message to Roswell Park’s 19th annual All Star Night on Saturday, October 24, at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. Haynes received the
Gilda Radner Courage Award, an annual honor presented to a public figure who has made a significant impact on cancer awareness and advocacy. He joins past honorees including Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, actress Marcia Wallace and Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy.
