Biostatistics
Description
The Biostatistics Resource ensures that biostatistical, bioinformatics and biomathematical support is readily available to basic, clinical and population-oriented RPCI collaborators. Services include exploratory data analysis; grant writing (statistical methods sections); hypothesis formulation; experimental design; fitting models to data; simulating data from models; developing customized data mining software and developing novel methods based on emerging technologies (.e.g. cutting edge microarray platforms, computer intensive statistical methods).
Statistical Genetics & Genomics Resource
The goal of BAVR group, headed by Dr. Daniel Gaile PhD., is to develop a sustainable and nationally recognized Biotechnical Analytic Resource for Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). The mission of the analytic resource will be to develop novel statistical methodologies and software applications for the analysis of data generated by experiments utilizing emerging biotechnologies. Further, BAVR will assist in the development and optimal design of nascent biotechnologies at RPCI.
The specific objectives for the analytic resource include developing custom quality control metrics and custom diagnostics with the ability to detect failures in high throughput technologies utilized at RPCI. Further, BAVR will develop and advance modeling tools and methods for normalization and standardization of biological signals.
The mission of the visualization aspect will be to develop custom visualizations for large high throughput biological datasets. The visualization aspect of BAVR is intimately connected with the analytics mission since developing QC methods and normalization methods will require novel methods to visualize the data and assess the quality of the analytics from biological signals.
A major strength for the BAVR is the ready access to the resources and expertise of the University at Buffalo’s Center for Computational Research (CCR). Specifically BAVR will utilize the CCR’s state of the art parallel computing as well as their extensive expertise in the reconstruction of biological imaging data.
