Who we are
The DNA Sequencing Core Facility is a section of the Biopolymer Resource, a shared resource facility at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The mission of the Biopolymer Resource is to facilitate scientific research at Roswell Park, State University of New York at Buffalo, Hauptmann-Woodward and other surrounding institutions by providing access to state-of-the-art biomolecular instrumentation and techniques, allowing investigators to accomplish their research goals in as timely and cost-effective a manner as possible. The Biopolymer Resource staff can also provide technical assistance and expertise to aid in both project design and development. The specific aims of the DNA sequencing lab are to provide DNA sequence and fragment analysis/genotyping data in the shortest turnaround time possible, while maintaining our high standards of quality and accuracy. Along with DNA sequencing, the Biopolymer Resource offers other technical services such as mass spectrometry and peptide purification. Please visit the Biopolymer Resource website at Biopolymer Resource for additional information about these services.
Where we are located and how to get here
The Biopolymer Resource is currently located in the Buffalo Life Science Complex, First floor. The DNA sequencing laboratory is located in Room L1-135.
To get to the BLSC from Main Street:
Turn Left onto Virginia Street and another Left onto Ellicott Street. Take a right on Virginia before the UB COE. The BLSC is directly adjacent to the COE, to the right of the small quad. To enter the building from this entrance, you will go into a small entranceway with a revolving door that has a telephone to contact security. *** It is advisable to call the lab prior to dropping off samples due to increased security.
For those coming from off-campus:
Get on to Rte. 33 West, heading towards downtown Buffalo. Take the 33 to the Locust Avenue exit. Exit at Locust Avenue and go to the second traffic light, which is the intersection of Locust Avenue and Ellicott Street. Make a right turn onto Ellicott Street. Go past the parking lot on your right and continue just beyond the housing complex on your right, and make a right onto Virginia Street going towards Michigan Street, if you wish to park in the parking ramp. There is short-term parking in front of the BLSC, or there is meter parking on parts of Elm Street.
Off-campus sample transport service
For those located on or near UB South Campus, we have a transport service that delivers DNA sequencing samples on a daily basis to Roswell Park. To drop off samples for delivery to us, go to the Medical Mailroom, located at 224 Farber Hall. There is a special mailbox reserved for DNA samples - you will need to contact mailroom personnel to get a key to this mailbox. Samples arrive at Roswell Park each morning and can usually be processed on the same day’s run, with results available the following day. When submitting samples using this service, please enclose your samples, along with a hard copy of your printed sequencing request form, in a disposable bag or container - Ziploc sandwich bags work well. Any other questions can be directed to the Medical Mailroom at 829-2779.
For those at UB North Campus, we now have a transport service as well that delivers samples to Roswell Park. The styrofoam sample drop-off box is located in 109 Cooke Hall, at the desk of Ms. Rose Stern. Samples can be dropped off daily BEFORE 4:00 PM and they are then taken to the central mail facility between 4:00 and 4:30. Samples should be submitted in a disposable container along with your request form. Samples will be brought to Roswell the following morning and will generally be processed on that day’s run.
Hours of operation
The DNA sequencing laboratory is open from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Contact information
To contact the DNA Sequencing laboratory, please call (716) 845-8032. The laboratory email address is biopolymer@roswellpark.org or to reach individual DNA sequencing core personnel, you can send email to either Michelle.Detwiler@roswellpark.org or Chris.Borrelli@roswellpark.org. Our laboratory fax number is (716) 845-3960. For out of state customers wishing to submit DNA samples, please send to the following address:
Roswell Park Cancer Institute
Biopolymer Resource
Elm and Carlton Sts.
Buffalo, N.Y. 14263
When mailing samples, it is preferable to choose overnight delivery. While DNA samples are fairly stable at ambient temperatures, prolonged stays at these temperatures can lead to degradation of DNA and subsequent deterioration of sequence quality, especially for samples of less than optimal purity.
Pricing
Effective May 1st 2008: DNA Sequencing prices were reduced for most volume sequencing levels. In addition, some new options and changes were introduced to make higher-volume sequencing more attainable and affordable.
New options include:
* New fees for 96-well plate sequencing and volume pricing for 96 well plate sequencing, both unreacted and prereacted.
* Pre-reacted samples. There is now an option to pre-react your own samples in order to make sequencing more economical. Pre-reacted samples are also at a flat per-sample price and are not subject to monthly template number requirements.
For billing purposes, volume pricing will be calculated per calendar month. That is, the appropriate number of samples must be submitted between the first and the end of the same month in order to receive the maximum discount. Please try to plan the timing of your projects accordingly. However, for those larger projects that you know in advance may run past a month, please contact the core and we will work with you to get the appropriate discount for your project.
Volume Level | Member | Non-Member | External |
Low Volume (1-49 samples/month) | $8 | $9 | $10 |
Medium Volume (50-249 samples/month) | $6 | $7 | $8 |
High Volume (>250 samples/month) | $5 | $5.50 | $6 |
Pre-reacted samples | $4 | $5 | $6 |
96-well plate structure | |||
96-well plate (unreacted), <10 plates | $480 | $576 | $576 |
96-well plate (unreacted), 10-40 plates | $420 | $504 | $504 |
96-well plate (unreacted), >40 plates | $380 | $456 | $456 |
96-well plate (pre-reacted) | $288 | $360 | $360 |
96-well plate (pre-reacted), >48 plates | $150 | $187.50 | $187.50 |

*If you are interested in pre-reacting your own samples (not the 96-well plate option), samples must be submitted in 8-tube strips or in plate format, as we cannot process individual tubes efficiently. See the link above for instructions on how to set up your own sequencing reactions.
"Full-service" sequencing includes cycle sequencing of DNA samples and primers, purification of reacted samples, sequencing run, analysis and editing of data. Hard copy printouts of color chromatograms are available upon request.
