Carolyn D. Farrell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG), an ABMG certified Genetic Counselor, and a licensed and certified Nurse Practitioner in Maternal and Women’s Health with a concentration in Human Genetics. She is a faculty member of the Roswell Park Graduate Division, SUNY at Buffalo School of Natural Sciences; the Department of Pediatrics, University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and an adjunct faculty member of the University’s School of Nursing. She is a member of the NCCN Guidelines Committee for Genetics/Familial Risk & Screening for Breast (and Ovarian) Cancer, as well as the ACOG Practice Guidelines Task Force on “Detecting Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk”. She was selected for a 3-year Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Leader Fellowship. Her leadership endeavors include development of the Clinical Genetics Service at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and initiation of a New York State Interdisciplinary Faculty Training team for integration of genetics into health care practitioner curricula and practice. Leadership positions include President, Treasurer, and Chair of the Bylaws committee of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) - of which she is a founding member, and President of the Nursing Alumni Association of the University at Buffalo. Farrell served on the American College of Medical Genetics and New York State Department of Health Steering Committee for Development of Clinical Guidelines in Genetics Practice, and the Subcommittee for Genetic Susceptibility to Breast and Ovarian Cancer: Assessment, Counseling and Testing. She also serves on the Genetics/Familial Risk Screening Committee of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, local advisory boards and the Institutional Review Board at Roswell Park. Farrell’s leadership roles also include Chairperson of a New York State Supreme Court judicial campaign committee.
Farrell is a member of Sigma Theta Tau (Nursing Honor Society), received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Science and Service from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Nursing, and has been recognized with Distinguished Service awards from the International Society of Nurses in Genetics, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Legislative Action Committee of the University of Buffalo General Alumni Association, and the Shared Decision-Making Committee of Williamsville Central School District.
Farrell is a member of the American College of Medical Genetics, American Society of Human Genetics, National Society of Genetic Counselors, and Oncology Nursing Society. She has authored or co-authored more than 25 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts, and lectures regularly to professional and public audiences. In August 2001, Farrell was a keynote presenter and participant in a newly developed educational program in Genetics for nurses in Japan.
Farrell’s research and clinical interests focus on genetics and cancer risk assessment, and the delivery of, access to, and innovative and practical approaches for integration of genetics into health care as well as addressing the related ethical, legal, economic and psychosocial issues.
