HRI: About Us

Health Research, Incorporated (HRI) is a not-for-profit corporation affiliated with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), a leading cancer research center located in Buffalo, NY. HRI's mission is to independently assist DOH and RPCI to effectively evaluate, solicit, and administer external financial support for DOH and RPCI projects, and to disseminate the benefits of DOH expertise through programs such as technology transfer.

History

HRI was established in 1953 primarily to serve the research programs of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, which at that time was an institution of the Department of Health. HRI has accepted and administered over 3.5 billion dollars in funding to supplement DOH and RPCI programs, and has established a proven track record of assuring that funds are utilized in accordance with the requirements of the sponsor. Sources of funding include Federal and State agencies, not-for-profit foundations and commercial firms. In addition, HRI administers funds from individual donors, estate bequests and court settlements. HRI has the ability to meet virtually any stipulated accounting and reporting requirement.

Legal Status

HRI is a not-for-profit corporation organized under the New York State not-for-profit Corporation Law. It is exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Gifts, bequests, and donations made to HRI are tax deductible for the donor.

Organization

HRI is governed by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom are DOH officials. The President of HRI is the State Commissioner of Health.The Corporation's research projects and programs, supported through grants, contracts and donations, are usually directed by DOH staff members, who serve as project directors and principal investigators. HRI's administrative functions are carried out by an experienced operations, grants administration, accounting, and technology transfer staff under the supervision of the Executive Director.
