Guidelines for Promotion
(Promotional meetings will be held semi-annually to review and vote on applicant’s request. These meetings will be held in January and July).
The applicant or the Chairperson will initiate promotion by meeting to discuss intent.
A Promotional Meeting will be held to review and vote on the applicant’s request.
Following the Promotional Meeting the Department Chairperson and the Departmental Administrator will compile the Application for Promotion.
Recommendations and Approvals Needed for Promotion are as follows:
- Candidates must receive a recommendation from the Department Chair;
- At least three letters of recommendation solicited by the Department Chair that are from leading scientists outside the Institute, which attest to the individual’s potential to develop a well funded and productive research laboratory;
- Approval of the Appointments and Promotions Committee; and
- Approval of the President and CEO
Performance Expectations Upon Promotion To Assistant Member
Probation for individuals promoted into a new title is five (5) years. In order to successfully complete probation, the probationary Assistant Member must, by the end of the probation term, satisfy all of the following requirements:
- Maintain at least one (1) externally peer-reviewed grant, with the expectation to recover at least 30% of his/her annual base salary or a minimum of $120,000 in recovery of indirect costs;
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals in the Assistant Member’s field of expertise as a first or senior author;
- Serve as an active member of a CCSG Program and participate in inter-programmatic collaboration;
- Serve on Institute committees and participate in national meetings; and
- Participate in the Institute Graduate Education Program
Performance Expectations Upon Promotion To Associate Member
Probation for individuals promoted into a new title is five (5) years. In order to successfully complete probation, the probationary Associate Member must, by the end of the probation term, satisfy all of the following requirements:
- Maintain at least one (1) externally peer-reviewed grant, with the expectation to recover at least 30% of his/her annual base salary or recover a minimum of $120,000 in indirect costs each peer-reviewed grant, and have adequate grant monies to fund 100% of his/her laboratory support staff’s annual salary;
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals in the Associate Member’s field of expertise as a first or senior author;
- Serve as an active member of a CCSG Program and participate in inter-programmatic collaboration;
- Serve on Institute committees and participate in national meetings; and
- Participate in the Institute Graduate Education Program.
Performance Expectations Upon Promotion To Full Member
Probation for individuals promoted into a new title is five (5) years. In order to successfully complete probation, the probationary Member must, by the end of the probation term, satisfy all of the following requirements:
- Maintain at least one (1) externally peer-reviewed grant, with the expectation to recover at least 30% of his/her annual base salary, or recover a minimum of $120,000 in indirect costs each peer-reviewed grant, and have adequate grant monies to fund 100% of his/her laboratory support staff’s annual salary;
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals in the Member’s field of expertise as a first or senior author;
- Serve as an active member of a CCSG Program and participate in inter-programmatic collaboration;
- Serve on Institute/national boards and committees, organize symposia and/or participate as an invited speaker or chairman of a program at a major scientific meeting;
- Demonstrate collaborative scientific activity with Institute members and the scientific community at large; and
- Participate in the Institute Graduate Education Program.
