R-25 Postdoctoral Training Program: Epidemiologic and Basic Science in Cancer Prevention and Control
[Brochure]
This Postdoctoral program will be based in Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) and is designed to bring basic science discoveries to bear on Cancer Prevention and Control. This program is funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
This program seeks to enable basic science researchers to work more effectively with population researchers. "Translation of basic science is critical, not just to therapeutic advance, but also to more effective prevention," said James Marshall, PhD, SVP, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, RPCI. "What is critical is the linkage of cutting-edge basic science to population analysis. Molecular biology promises new biomarkers of susceptibility and early disease; these will have to be tested in population settings. Chemoprevention represents the hope that much of cancer can be averted. Realization of these advances will require population scientists who can communicate and work with basic scientists and basic scientists who can communicate with population scientists."
Participants will work with a primary mentor to design a customized curriculum, obtain other learning experiences, and to embark on a research project. Trainees will also work with one or more secondary mentors whose skills complement those of the primary mentor. There are excellent opportunities for collaboration with clinicians working in breast, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, skin and hematopoietic cancers.
This program is under the leadership of James Marshall, PhD and Clement Ip, PhD. Participating faculty include: Christine Ambrosone, PhD; Garth Anderson, PhD; Matthew Bonner, PhD (UB); John Cowell, PhD; K. Michael Cummings, PhD; Stephen Edge, MD; Jo Freudenheim, PhD (UB); Gary Giovino, PhD (UB); Andrew Hyland, PhD; Margot Ip, PhD; Martin Mahoney, MD, PhD; Susan McCann, PhD; Philip McCarthy, MD; James Mohler, MD; Kirsten Moysich, PhD; Norma Nowak, PhD; and Yuesheng Zhang, MD, PhD.
Eligible candidates must have completed doctoral training in epidemiology, social science, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology or in the clinical disciplines. Candidates must be US Citizens or have a green card. Address inquiries to Alicia Tuyn, Program Coordinator, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm and Carlton Streets, Buffalo, New York, 14263. If you wish to send via email, please write R-25 Postdoctoral Training Program in the subject line and send to alicia.tuyn@roswellpark.org. A curriculum vitae should be included with your inquiry.
