On July 4, 2006, Independence Day, Roswell Park Cancer Institute went boldly where no other Western New York hospital or local healthcare facility has gone before. On that date, our entire campus went “smoke-free.”
All of us at Roswell Park see firsthand the results of long-term tobacco use. As an NCI-designated cancer center, RPCI has, as part of its mission, the clear mandate to prevent cancer. The simplest, most direct way to do that is to separate ourselves from the self-destructive and potentially lethal practice of cigarette smoking.
As leaders in the international cancer arena, we are committed to achieving a healthier world. The best place to start is at home, on our campus. The best way to lead is by example.
While some of you may see this initiative as an antismoking campaign, it is much more than that. It is all about safeguarding the health and welfare of every individual who walks through these doors each day.
We worked closely with our own Departments of Health Behavior and Clinical Prevention, the American Cancer Society, Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition, and the unions represented on our campus, to ensure that our policies and initiatives respect everyone's rights to a healthy environment.
We are also dedicated to helping those employees, vendors, patients, and visitors who want to quit smoking. We will continue the practice of offering smoking cessation classes and make available important resources and compassionate support.
July 4, 2006, was truly a momentous day that Roswell Park Cancer Institute as we declared Mission Accomplished -- We’re all clear!
