The department, headed by Martin Mahoney, MD, PhD, focuses on cancer control and surveillance, cancer screening approaches among primary care health professionals, cancer patterns and prevention of cancer and clinical interventions for prevention/early detection.

There is strong support for clinical studies of cancer prevention and early detection, particularly for evaluating new approaches for cancer education of women and minority and high-risk populations.
