For aggressive cancers in patients who choose active therapy, primary treatment options for prostate cancer include surgery and radiation therapy. Surgeons remove cancer confined to the prostate gland using a sophisticated anatomical "nerve sparing" technique, which helps preserve the nerves responsible for normal bladder and sexual function. Roswell Park also offers robotic surgery using Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci® Surgical System as a alternative to traditional open surgical techniques.
RPCI is involved in a region-wide brachytherapy program, which uses ultrasound-guided radioactive seed implantation to kill tumor cells. You can visit the Buffalo Niagara Prostate Cancer Consortium to learn more. Recent improvements in this form of therapy now allow for better placement of radiotherapeutic seeds, ensuring more effective treatment with fewer side effects. For very aggressive prostate cancer, RPCI’s medical oncologists are integrating the use of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy with surgery or radiation therapy.
Additionally, as per the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines, some men may be recommended to have careful observation (also called active surveillance, expectant management or watchful waiting).
RPCI is one of a few cancer centers that offer a family history analysis. Men whose family histories suggest an increased risk of hereditary prostate cancer may be referred to our genetic counselors, who can help them further evaluate their risk.
