Ultrasound-guided Needle Biopsy
This procedure involves using an ultrasound to identify the area in question. It is performed in the radiology department. The Radiologist will find the best location through which to obtain a biopsy. This area will be numbed with medication and then the biopsy is obtained. This is an outpatient procedure that requires a stay of 3-4 hours. The liver and lymph nodes in the neck are typical areas biopsied under ultrasound guidance.
Preparation
You will not be able to eat or drink 8 hours before the procedure. You will need to have someone drive you home.
Advantages
Advantages to the ultrasound guided needle biopsy include an outpatient stay of only 3-4 hours and no need for sedation.

What to expect after the procedure
You will recover in a special area for three to four hours after the procedure. You may eat immediately after the biopsy. It will take three to five days for the biopsy results to be available.
WHAT TO REPORT TO YOUR PHYSICIAN
- Increasing pain at the biopsy site.
- Temperature more than 101 degrees.
- Bleeding or drainage of pus from the biopsy site.
