Although it is one of the most common cancers in other parts of the world, cancer that starts in the tissues of the liver (know as primary liver cancer) is very rare in the United States. On the other hand, cancer that spreads (metastasizes) to the liver from another organ is very common. In this case, the cancer in the liver would keep the name of the primary cancer (for example, breast cancer or colon cancer) because the cancer cells come from the other organ (the breast or colon), not the liver.
For more information about the spread of cancer (metastasis), please refer to the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Fact sheet: Metastatic Cancer: Questions & Answers.
For resources about cancer that has spread to the liver, please refer to the section of our website that pertains to the orginal or primary cancer.
