WNY Breast Resource Center
An anniversary cake was recently cut to celebrate the Western New York Breast Resource Center’s 12 years of success in helping patients—and to thank the many community supporters who have allowed the Center to grow and thrive. It all started in 1995, when the Bosom Buddies support group decided to sponsor a walk in East Aurora to raise funds to develop an information service for newly diagnosed women. Thanks to their efforts, the doors of the WNY Breast Resource Center opened on February 1, 1997.
The Breast Resource Center is located on the second floor of the Roswell Park Hospital. Over the past decade, the Center has assisted thousands of individuals, and the annual Bosom Buddies Walk has raised more than $300,000 to continue the Center’s work. Center Coordinator Joanne Janicki says the Center is an informal gathering spot that often leads to “impromptu support groups” for the sharing of information and experiences.
The Breast Cancer Resource Center is open to all breast cancer patients, not only those being treated at Roswell Park. Along with information about breast cancer research, treatment and support services, the Center offers many items that provide physical and emotional comfort. Patients who are headed for chemotherapy can pick up a cozy blanket, a pillow to cushion an arm, or a magazine or audiotape to help pass the time. Those who have lost their hair as a result of treatment can choose from a selection of pretty hats, wigs and headscarves, provided free of charge.
