The Neuro-oncology team treats patients with a number of different of tumors that arise from brain tissue and its associated structures. OverviewThe Brain Tumor Treatment Center provides a full spectrum of clinical neurological services to patients with benign and malignant tumors of the brain and spine. Treatment includes conventional and computer-assisted neurosurgery, microneurosurgery, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The study of cancers of the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is highlighted in the field of neuro-oncology. These physicians, researchers and support team members continue to advance the care of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors, delivering the most effective treatments available with the goal of maintaining each patient's quality of life. A team of physicians works together to diagnose and treat patients with cancers and benign tumors of the central nervous system. The American Cancer Society estimates over 21,000 new brain and other nervous system cancer cases diagnosed this year (2008). Gliomas are the most common types of brain tumors treated by the surgical, radiation and medical neuro-oncologists at Roswell Park. They represent a diverse group of tumors that behave in different ways and grow at different rates. Consequently, it is important to distinguish between the different types when evaluating any particular patient’s condition and treatment options. Some gliomas may be cured or held in remission for long periods by surgical excision alone, while others will re-grow despite extensive treatment, including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Even within a particular category, there may be wide variation between individual patients in terms of tumor behavior and response to treatment. |
