Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
Total Body Irradiation is a technique used to deliver a large field of irradiation to the entire body. TBI is part of a complex treatment program for aplastic anemia, leukemia’s, lymphomas and certain other cancers and is combined with high-dose chemotherapy in preparation for bone marrow or stem cell transplantation. TBI also helps to produce immunosuppression that is necessary to keep the recipient’s immune system from rejecting the bone marrow transplant.
TBI is usually given in two or three treatments per day. Each treatment lasts about 30 – 60 minutes and the treatments are given approximately four to six hours apart. This treatment schedule continues for two to five consecutive days totaling anywhere from four to nine treatments altogether.
