Dr. Michael A. Zevon joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1983 as Director of the Department of Psychology, and was appointed Chairman of the Department of Psychosocial Oncology in 1998. He also is Co-Director, Chronic Pain Service, RPCI; Associate Professor of Oncology, RPCI; Associate Research Professor, Department of Natural Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo (UB); Research Associate Professor, Department of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health, State University of New York at Albany; and has served as Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Research into Environment and Health, Leeds University, Leeds, England.
Dr. Zevon earned his doctoral degree in Psychology at the University of Minnesota in 1980. He is licensed in Psychology by New York State and serves as consultant to the Patient Services Committee of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and other national and international groups.
Dr. Zevon's research focuses on the patient's emotional response to cancer treatment and the underlying stress and coping relationships of patients and their families. Dr. Zevon has spearheaded RPCI's implementation of distress management pathways in response to National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines, and is working with colleagues to examine the distress parameters associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in relation to broader, well-established affective measures. Recent grant awards include the Association for Research of Childhood Cancer: Fatigue in Survivors of Hodgkin's Disease and the Office of Naval Research, Psychosocial Consequences of the Chernobyl Accident in the Ukraine.
Dr. Zevon is a member of the American Psychological Association, Society of Behavioral Medicine, Society of Pediatric Psychology and the American Pain Society. He is associated with the Psychology and Quality of Life committees of the Children's Oncology Group; the Psychology and Quality of Life committees, Cancer & Leukemia Group B; the Quality of Life Committee, Gynecological Oncology Group; and the Psychology and Neurology Committee of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.
Dr. Zevon has authored or co-authored more than 130 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts and has made over 135 presentations at national and international scientific meetings. He is a reviewer for Journal of Personality and Social Psychology; Cancer; Oncology; Psycho-Oncology; and other journals and professional organizations.
