Dr. Laszlo L. Mechtler joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1990 and became Chief of Clinical Neuro-Oncology, Department of Neurology in 1994. Dr. Mechtler has been an attending neuro-oncologist and neuroimager at the Dent Neurologic Institute (DNI) and the Kaleida Health system since 1989. He earned his medical degree at Semmelweiss University of Medicine in Budapest, Hungary in 1984. Following residency training in Neurology at the DNI in 1987, he became chief resident for Neurology at the State University New York at Buffalo from 1987 to 1988 after which he completed a fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston (1989) and a Neuroimaging fellowship at the Lucy Dent Imaging Center (1991) at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York.
Dr. Mechtler is licensed in New York and Texas and is certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (1990). Dr. Mechtler’s research interests focus on diagnosis and treatment of malignant brain tumors, neuroimaging, headache and pain management. He is principal investigator of numerous ongoing research protocols and has developed brain tumor centers in Hungary where he is the founder for the Society of Neuro-Oncology.
Dr. Mechtler is a member of the American Medical Association, Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA), American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN), European Association for Neuro-Oncology and the Buffalo Rochester Syracuse Neuro-Oncology Research Group. He is on the Board of Directors as well as an MRI Program Director at the ASN and he is on the Board of Directors and fellowship program chairman for the HMAA. Dr. Mechtler was the recipient of The Neurology Clinical Teacher of the Year 2000 award from State University New York at Buffalo.
Dr. Mechtler has authored and co-authored more than 40 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts and has presented his research at numerous national and international meetings.
