Dr. Philip L. McCarthy joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1996, and became Chief of the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Section, Department of Medicine, in 1997. He earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, in 1982, completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1985. Between 1985 and 1989, he completed a research/clinical fellowship in Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA.
Dr. McCarthy is licensed by New York State and Massachusetts and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (Internal Medicine, 1985; Medical Oncology, 1987; Hematology, 1988). He also is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. McCarthy's research interests focus on health effects of radiation exposure, modulation of graft versus host disease and of chemotherapy toxicity, blood and marrow stem cell isolation, immune modulation after transplantation, cancer immunotherapy, preclinical models of bone marrow transplantation and developing models for patient outcomes after blood and marrow transplantation.
Dr. McCarthy is a member of the American Society of Hematology, International Society for Hematotherapy and Graft Engineering, American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. He has been a member of the Nominating Committee for the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research since 2008, on the National Marrow Donor Program Patient Focused Initiatives Committee since 2008 and a core member of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B Transplant Committee since 2001. He is the Principal Investigator for CALGB Phase III national study to examine the role of lenalidomide versus placebo maintenance therapy following autotransplant for multiple myeloma. Dr. McCarthy was first listed in 2003-2004 Best Doctors In America® and most recently in 2007-2008. He currently serves on several committees at RPCI and at UB.
Dr. McCarthy has authored or co-authored more than 200 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts including 100 peer-reviewed articles. He is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Bone Marrow Transplantation, European Respiratory Journal, Environmental Health Perspectives and Haematologica Photochemistry and Photobiology and serves on the editorial board of Biology of Blood & Marrow Transplantation and Bone Marrow Transplantation.
