Dr. Michael R. Kuettel joined Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1999, as the Chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine, and Professor and Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology, School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo.

Dr. Kuettel earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, IL. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Northwestern Hospital, Chicago, IL, and in Radiation Oncology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD. His doctoral degree in Cell Biology was from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and he earned an MBA from the Georgetown University School of Business, Washington, DC. Dr. Kuettel has had special training in brachytherapy, IMRT, and Gamma Knife.

Dr. Kuettel is licensed by New York, District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland, and is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology (Radiation Oncology). Dr. Kuettel is the Clinical Director for Radiation Medicine for Kaleida Health and Consultant for the Washington Advisory Group.

His research interests include neoplastic transformation of human prostate and cervical cells by ionizing radiation; in vitro screening of potential chemopreventive agents using human prostate epithelial cells; investigation of a new tumor suppressor gene in prostate cancer; and practice guidelines/outcomes for patients with early stage prostate cancer.

Dr. Kuettel is a member of many professional organizations, including, among others, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (Health Care Economics Council; Code Utilization and Application Committee; Regulatory Committee; Practice Management Committee Chair, APC Committee); American College of Radiation Oncology (Board of Directors; Chair, Economics Committee); and the Center for Health Dispute Resolution (professional guidelines for radiation oncology).

He has also collaborated with the national prostate cancer patient advocacy and support group – Us Too! – to establish the Western New York Prostate Cancer Consortium, a unique partnership among community urologists, academic institutions, health care organizations, insurance companies, and a comprehensive cancer center. He is a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals, has authored numerous articles, and has received many research grants and contracts for his work in radiation oncology.
