Klippenstein, Donald L., MD
Vice Chairman
, Department of Radiology
Director of CT, Department of Radiology
Associate Professor of Oncology, Roswell Park Cancer Institute
Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology,
State University of New York
School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Buffalo
Dr. Klippenstein joined Roswell Park after his Fellowship in Body Imaging at the University of Michigan and Radiology Residency in the Harvard system (Womens’ and Brigham Hospital). He directs a CT service of 11 radiologists that is aggressively interventional, performing guided biopsies and drainages of virtually all organs/sites from the thoracic inlet to the toes. Eleven radiology nurses, trained in conscious sedation, are shared with the Interventional/Angiography and Ultrasound sections, with post-procedure recovery in a full-staffed adjacent 8-bed unit.
Dr. Klippenstein’s CT group is equipped for, and expert in, all three-dimensional vascular reconstructions and CT angiography, including virtual colonoscopy, virtual bronchoscopy, and CT coronary angiography. The service includes two specially-trained Radiology PA’s, who assist with procedures, protocol cases, care for contrast medium reactions, and dictate cases under radiologist supervision and countersignature.
Dr. Klippenstein remains an active participant in the Ultrasound division, and he is Director of the Radiology Department Cardiac Imaging Group.
A consummate teacher, Dr. Klippenstein is sought after by medical students and fellows alike, and his research interests vary widely, from early lung cancer detection to the amelioration of contrast medium toxicity. He recently served brilliantly as President of the medical staff, and was the only President in recent years to serve two successive terms.
