John M. Kane, III, MD, joined the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) faculty in 2002, as a Surgical Oncologist in the Department of Surgery. He also is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Kane comes to RPCI from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Division of Surgical Oncology, where he served as Program Director for the General Surgery Residency.
Dr. Kane earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, in 1991, and completed residency training in Surgery (including a two-year surgical research fellowship) at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, in 1998. Dr. Kane completed a surgical oncology fellowship at RPCI in 2000. He is licensed by New York State and Pennsylvania and board-certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Kane's expertise is in the the following areas:
- Melanoma
- Soft tissue sarcomas
- Peritoneal surface malignancies (carcinomatosis from GI cancers, pseudomyxoma peritonei, and mesothelioma)
- Merkel cell carcinoma
- Isolated limb perfusion/isolated limb infusion for in-transit melanoma and unresectable extremity sarcomas
- Intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion (IPHC) for peritoneal surface malignancies
Dr. Kane conducts research in the clinical implementation of a human recombinant polyvalent heat shock protein-antigen chaperone complex melanoma vaccine and also biomarker expression of soft tissue sarcomas/correlation with clinical outcome.
Dr. Kane is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the Connective Tissue Oncology Society. Dr. Kane has authored or co-authored 50 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts.
