Dr. John F. Gibbs joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1992, and was appointed Chief of the Upper Gastrointestinal & Endoscopy Service, Department of Surgery, in 1999. He earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego, in 1985. Following residency training in General Surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, IL, in 1990, he completed fellowship training in Liver and Kidney Transplant Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX (1992), and in Experimental Therapeutics and Surgical Oncology at RPCI in 1996.
Dr. Gibbs is licensed by New York State and is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners (1986) and American Board of Surgery (1991). He also is Associate Professor of Surgery at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Gibbs’ research interests focus on the natural history of solid organ tumors; immunoactivation against liver tumors; and evaluation of new treatment modalities such as radiofrequency ablation to expand treatment options for patients with liver cancer.
Dr. Gibbs is a member of many professional organizations, including, the American Association for Cancer Research, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Association for Academic Surgery, Connective Tissue Oncology Society, National Medical Association, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and Buffalo Surgical Society. He is currently a member of both the Liver Committee and Commission on Cancer-Cancer Physician Liaison Committee of the American College of Surgeons and serves on a number of committees at RPCI and the University at Buffalo.
