Dr. Marwan G. Fakih was appointed Staff Physician in the Division of Gastroenterology Department of Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 2002. He earned his medical degree at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, in 1992, and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, in 1995, and a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, in 2001.
Dr. Fakih is licensed in New York State and is board-certified in Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and as an Associate Professor of Oncology at RPCI.
Dr. Fakih’s research interests include the development of novel therapies (phase I studies) and the development of new treatments for patients with colorectal cancer. His colorectal cancer research involves novel neoadjuvant treatments for rectal cancer, development of “stop and go” chemotherapy approaches to reduce toxicities, treatment of the elderly colorectal cancer patient population, and the development of new treatments for patients with disease that no longer responds to standard therapies. His work also includes prevention studies with a focus on high dose vitamin D supplementation in the at risk population.
Dr. Fakih is a member of the American College of Physicians and the European Society of Medical Oncology. He also serves on the colorectal cancer committee for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
Dr. Fakih has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented more than 50 abstracts at national meetings. He is the principal investigator on several peer-reviewed and pharmaceutical research grants.
