Dr. Stephen B. Edge joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 1992, as Chief, Breast Surgery, Department of Surgery and was appointed Chair of the Department of Breast and Soft Tissue Surgery; Medical Director of the Breast Center, Department of Surgery, in 2002. He earned his medical degree at Case Western University Medical School, Cleveland, OH, in 1979.
During his residency training at University Hospitals of Cleveland, 1980-1986, he completed fellowship training in the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD (1981-1984). Dr. Edge has had special training in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (1990) and Laparoscopic Colectomy (1992).
Dr. Edge is licensed by New York State and Virginia, and is certified by the American Board of Surgery (1987, Recertified, 1996). He is Professor of Surgery, University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and serves at RPCI as Medical Director of the Lymphedema Treatment Program and Co-director of the Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation Program.
Dr. Edge's research interests focus on breast cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment. A major focus is health services research, including the study of how cancer care is delivered, and developing community-wide mechanisms to evaluate and improve the quality of cancer care and outcomes.
Dr. Edge is a member of many professional organizations, including, among others, the Society of Surgical Oncology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network (Board of Directors, Outcomes Committee, Breast Cancer Guideline Development Committee, Guidelines Steering Committee); American Federation for Cancer Research (Medical Advisory Panel); American College of Surgeons (Commission on Cancer Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Western New York Chapter); American Society of Clinical Oncology Health Services Research Committee and is Co-Chair of the Post-mastectomy Radiation Guideline Committee of ASCO. In addition, he is the Vice-Chair of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), and Chair of the Collaborative Stage Task Force of the AJCC. He also collaborated with breast cancer support groups to establish the Western New York Breast Resource Center at RPCI in 1997.
The Breast Surgery Service at RPCI, under Dr. Edge's direction, was named as one of the nation's top five by American Health magazine in 1996. Dr. Edge received the Volunteer Service Award from the American Cancer Society in 1996; the Breast Cancer Hero Award from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1997; and Heart of Mercy Award from the Kevin Guest House in 2000. Good Housekeeping magazine named Dr. Edge among the "Top 318 Cancer Specialists for Women" in 1999; Redbook magazine included him among the nation's best breast cancer specialists in 2001; and in 2002, Ladies Home Journal included him in their list of “The Breast Cancer Specialists Rated the Best by Their Peers.” He was named to America's Top Doctors in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Dr. Edge has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal publications and book chapters.
