Dr. Ian Laurence Cohen joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 2000, as Attending Physician in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine. He earned his medical degree at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, in 1977. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT (1984), and a clinical fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Albany Medical College/Ellis Hospital Critical Care Center, Schenectady, NY (1986). Dr. Cohen comes to RPCI from The Buffalo General Hospital where he served as Director of the Intermediate Level of Care Unit.
Dr. Cohen is licensed by New York State and is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Critical Care Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He also is Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, University at Buffalo School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Cohen’s clinical and research interests focus on the principles and practice of intensive care monitoring; managing agitation in the critically ill; and patterns in costs and outcomes for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation.
Dr. Cohen is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Cohen has authored or co-authored more than 90 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts. He is a Reviewer for the Critical Care Medicine, Chest, American Journal Review of Respiratory, Intensive Care Medicine and the Joint Commission Journal for Quality Improvement.
