Dr. Richard T. Cheney joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 1995, as an Attending Pathologist, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and was appointed Chair in 2003. He earned his medical degree at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, NM, in 1980. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, NY; residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (1986) as well as fellowship training in Cytopathology (1987) and Dermatopathology (1993) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Dr. Cheney is licensed by New York State and is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners (1981), and by the American Board of Pathology (Anatomic & Clinical Pathology [1988], Special Competence in Cytopathology [1992]; Dermatology with Special Qualification in Dermatopathology [1993]). He also is Director of Dermatopathology Training, Department of Dermatology, and Professor, Experimental Pathology Program, Roswell Park Graduate Division, University at Buffalo.
Dr. Cheney's research interests focus on microscopic diagnosis of skin disease; non-melanoma skin cancer; mechanisms of photodynamic therapy; the role of the immune system in cancer development; lung cancer including pre-neoplastic disease and accuracy in diagnosis and prognostic factors for cancer patients. He is one of only 1,600 board-certified Dermatopathologists in the United States.
Dr. Cheney is a member of the United States/Canadian Academy of Pathology, American Society of Dermatopathology, American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Currently, he serves as consultant to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network on preparation of Practice Guidelines for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Cancer and Leukemia Group B(CALGB), Southwestern Oncology Group (SWOG) and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
Dr. Cheney has authored or co-authored more than 90 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts.
