Dr. Zale P. Bernstein joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1988, as Cancer Research Clinician, Division of Clinical Immunology. He currently serves as Medical Oncologist, Department of Medicine; Director of the Center for HIV-Related Malignancies, and Director of the Immunodeficiency Program at RPCI. He earned his medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. in 1980 and completed residency training in Internal Medicine (1983) and fellowship training in Hematology (1986) at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Bernstein is licensed by New York State and is a licensed New York State Laboratory Director in Hematology, Blood banking, Immunohematology and Histocompatibility. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners (1981), American Board of Internal Medicine (1984) with subspecialty certification in Hematology (1986) and Oncology (1987). He also is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the UB School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and Medical Director, Center for Cancer Care and Immuno Blood Conditions, Erie County Medical Center, the major teaching affiliate of SUNY Buffalo, where he is chief of Hematology-Oncology.
Dr. Bernstein's research interests focus on developing novel vaccination strategies for the treatment of patients with B-cell malignancies and innovative approaches to restore immune function in individuals with HIV and HIV malignancies.
He is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Photodynamic Association, National Gaucher's Disease Foundation, and the American Association for Cancer Research.
Dr. Bernstein has authored or co-authored more than 120 journal publications, book chapters, and abstracts and lectures extensively in his specialty. He is a journal reviewer for Journal of Cancer, Journal of Biological Modifiers, PDQ Editorial Boards, PDQ Voluntary Protocol Reviewer, National Institutes of Health, CRC Site Reviewers and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
