Dr. Judy L. Smith joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1991, as Attending Surgeon, Upper Gastrointestinal & Endoscopy Service, Department of Surgery. She was appointed Assistant Vice President for Clinical Affairs in 1998 and Medical Director of the Institute in 2000. Dr. Smith earned her medical degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1984. Following residency training in General Surgery at Hartford Hospital, University of Connecticut in 1989, she completed a Surgical Fellowship at RPCI in 1991. She earned a Masters in Administrative Medicine at the University of Wisconsin/Madison in 2000.

Dr. Smith is licensed by New York State and is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners (1985) and American Board of Surgery (1990, Recertified, 1999). She is also certified as Physician Executive (2000). Dr. Smith’s research interests focus on quality in health care, medical ethics, student education and the multidisciplinary therapy of gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Smith is a member of many professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Association for Academic Surgery, Association for Surgical Education, Society for the Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the American College of Physician Executives. Currently, she chairs the Surgery Quality Assurance committee of Cancer & Leukemia Group B. She is the Surgical Clerkship Director for the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and serves on a number of committees at RPCI and the University at Buffalo. She was awarded the Siegel Teaching Award for "Excellence in Teaching" from the UB School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences in 1999.

Dr. Smith has authored or co-authored more than 30 journal publications, book chapters and abstracts. She is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for the journal Cancer, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine.
