James Marshall, PhD, Mentor for Young Scientists at National Cancer Research Annual Meeting

BUFFALO, NY – James Marshall, PhD, Senior Vice President for Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), will serve as a mentor to young scientists during the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 100th Annual Meeting 2009, April 18 - 22 at the Colorado Convention Center.
Dr. Marshall will offer his expertise during the 12th annual Grant Writing Workshop during the Professional Advancement Session, April 18, Noon – MDT, Centennial A-B, Hyatt Regency, Denver, CO.
“Well-trained scientists are essential to continuing progress against cancer. I am honored to participate in this program, which supports cancer research training and offers career- development opportunities for these talented researchers,” said Dr. Marshall.
The workshop for beginning grant writers is aimed toward clinical and postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and medical students. Topics during mentored roundtable discussions will include grant funding opportunities; the components of a research grant; how to formulate clear specific aims; how to develop a candidate statement; a training program; the grant scoring and review process; and the common major flaws that negatively impact a grant.
Dr. Marshall is a distinguished leader in diet and cancer prevention and has authored more than 240 journal publications and abstracts. His research is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Marshall is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the AACR and the American Epidemiological Society, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society of Preventive Oncology and the Society for Epidemiologic Research. He is member of the NCI review group that evaluates applications for cancer center designation. He also served with the National Academy of Sciences investigating antioxidant supplementation for the American diet.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation’s first cancer research, treatment and education center.
