BUFFALO, NY – The Prostate Net presented its annual “In the Know” Award for Clinical Research Excellence to T. Ming Chu, PhD, DSc, Chair Emeritus, Diagnostic Immunology Research, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, at a gala luncheon in New York City. The award honors those individuals and organizations that, through their demonstrated leadership, implementation of novel strategies and/or commitment in time, energy and resources, have made positive contributions to improving the quality of life of those they serve by reducing health disparities impacting their communities.
Dr. Chu is an early pioneer in developing new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the late 1970s, he discovered the prostate specific antigen, which later led to the development of the PSA test. This revolutionary test, heralded as one of the most significant cancer developments of the 20th century, remains the "gold standard" for prostate cancer detection and management.
In presenting the award to Dr. Chu, Virgil Simons, founder and President of The Prostate Net, noted that the introduction and use of the PSA test, which was built on Dr. Chu’s ground-breaking research, has been a true lifesaver for so many men who would otherwise have no tool to help profile their disease risk.
Other individuals who received "In the Know" Awards included Donald S. Coffey, PhD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, for Lifetime Achievement; and Everett Dodson, Howard University Cancer Program, for Patient Advocacy.
