For Immediate Release
March 26, 2007
BUFFALO, NY – The WNY Breast Resource Center at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) has been awarded a $27,686 community grant from the Western New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, one of more than 100 affiliates nationwide dedicated to putting an end to breast cancer.
The grant will support a unique initiative to provide psychosocial support to women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and to their families. The program will include social networking meetings, a trip to a breast cancer symposium and a weekend retreat. Staff from Life Transitions Center, Inc., an affiliate of the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, will provide counseling and group facilitation services.
The WNY Breast Resource Center at RPCI offers women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families a place where they can find information, togetherness, hope and support--including introductions to breast cancer support groups and fellow patients. The new metastatic breast cancer support group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at various locations. For more information call 716-845-4432. The WNY Breast Resource Center is funded by generous donations made to Roswell Park, including gifts from the Bosom Buddies’ Walk for Roswell and VIVA for Life events.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates which hold events such as the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
