Cori Lecture Presented At Roswell Park
BUFFALO, NY – Craig B. Thompson, MD, will present the 2006 Cori Lecture at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) March 1, 8 am in the Research Studies Center, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY. Dr. Thompson is Scientific Director, Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and Chairman, Department of Cancer Biology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia.
The Cori Lecture honors Drs. Carl and Gerty Cori, the Nobel Prize winning researchers who served on the faculty of RPCI from 1922 to 1933.
In his lecture “PET Scans, PI3 Kinase Mutations, and the Cori Cycle: Implications for the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Cancer,” Dr. Thompson will discuss implications of the Coris’ research today on the molecular basis for the metabolism of cancer. His presentation will discuss the Warburg Effect and its relevance to cancer diagnosis by PET scan; explain the recent implications of the Coris’ Nobel Prize discoveries for cancer pathogenesis and describe the role metabolism plays in cell death.
While at Roswell Park, the Cori’s initiated work on the chemistry to the glycogen-glucose cycle. This work earned them the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. With this honor, Gerty Cori became the first American woman and the third woman in the world to be awarded the Nobel Prize. Dr. Carl Cori presented the first Cori Lecture at RPCI in 1968.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation’s first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Upstate New York.
