Cori Lecture Presented At Roswell Park
For Immediate Release
January 10, 2008
BUFFALO, NY – Jacques Pouyssegur, PhD, will present the Cori Lecture at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), Monday, January 14, at 12:30 pm, in the Gaylord-Cary Meeting Room, Research Studies Center, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY. The lecture is open to the public.
The Cori Lecture honors Drs. Carl and Gerty Cori, the Nobel Prize winning researchers who served on the faculty of RPCI from 1922 to 1933.
Dr. Pouyssegur is from the University of Nice, France, where he serves as CNRS Research Director, Exceptional Class and Director of Institute of Signaling, Developmental Biology and Cancer Research. In his lecture, “Hypoxia Signaling & Cancer Metabolism: Novel Anticancer Targets,” he will discuss the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia signaling in normal tissue and in tumors; describe how oxygen pressure controls vasculogenesis; and offer his vision of new anticancer approaches by targeting cancer metabolism.
Dr. Pouyssegur is one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of stress signaling, apoptosis and cancer. His research is focused on understanding the molecular basis of angiogenesis, hypoxia signaling and signal transduction. Dr. Pouyssegur is the author of more than 320 peer-reviewed publications and the recipient of several awards, including the Sir Hans Krebs Medal.
While at Roswell Park, the Coris initiated work on the chemistry of the glycogen-glucose cycle. This work earned them the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. With this honor, Gerty Cori became the first American woman and the third woman in the world to be awarded the Nobel Prize. Dr. Carl Cori presented the first Cori Lecture at RPCI in 1968.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation’s first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York. RPCI is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the nation’s leading cancer centers. Roswell Park has affiliate sites and collaborative programs in New York, Pennsylvania, and in China.
