Two Faculty Appointments to Department at RPCI
BUFFALO, NY – Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) has appointed two new faculty members to the Department of Urologic Oncology. Gary Smith, PhD, will serve as Co-leader of the prostate program for the RPCI Cancer Center Support (Core) Grant and Wendy Huss, PhD, will serve as Assistant Member.
Dr. Smith comes to RPCI from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine since 1996. He earned his doctorate in genetics from North Carolina State University in 1975 and completed postdoctoral training at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1977 and Environmental Pathology in 1978. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Association of Pathologists and the American Association of Cancer Research. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 journal articles and book chapters. His research interests include racial differences in prostate cancer mortality and whether prostate stem cells and blood vessels provide targets for new therapies for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.
Dr. Huss also comes to RPCI from the University of North Carolina, where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She earned her doctoral degree in molecular and cellular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, in 2001. She is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, Society of Basic Urologic Research and Women in Cancer Research. Dr. Huss has authored or co-authored more than 30 journal articles. Her research interests include the role of androgen regulation and prostate stem cells when prostate cancer relapses.
