Nature of Work and Responsibilities:
RPCI has been the headquarters for the New York State Smokers' Quitline since its inception in 1999. The NYSSQ is primarily a phone-based service which has grown rapidly in recent years. The program has a population-based approach...to reach as many smokers seeking help as possible. We do this through brief interventions, thus allowing our resources to accommodate more smokers.
Clients access NYSSQ services through mass media campaigns, word of mouth, or through health care provider referrals. Initial sessions allow us to coach clients through the quit process and to screen them for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) eligibility. Starter kits and support materials are sent to eligible clients. Follow up calls are placed to all participants in the NRT program to ascertain problems, field questions, and to help further with the quit process.
The Smoking Cessation Associate's duties will include, but are not limited to, responding to incoming calls to the NYSSQ, providing brief cessation coaching, conducting screening for nicotine patch eligibility, and providing resources and materials to smokers trying to quit. This candidate will also service calls from health professionals and educators using a variety of mechanisms and resources and locate appropriate, accurate and up-to-date information and materials in response to inquiries related to smoking cessation.
