Open Door Policy Offers Personalized Support
The WNY Breast Resource Center is more than just a place to do research.
It's a place with a personal touch where medical jargon is translated into understandable terms, and where anyone can come to begin to understand what breast cancer is, what medical procedures and tests mean, and why they are done. Most importantly it's a place where people can find togetherness, hope and support -- including introductions to breast cancer support groups and fellow patients -- to help turn a cold and frightening disease into something that can be managed, fought and won.
"The Center was instrumental in helping me research and sort through everything, and for that, I will always be grateful," said breast cancer survivor Charlene Maley.
"Seeing a very anxious woman relax... that tells me we're doing our job and the Resource Center is serving its purpose," said Joanne Janicki, WNY Breast Resource Center Coordinator.
Since opening in February 1997, the WNY Breast Resource Center has assisted thousands of individuals, serving, on average, 600 people each year. Its work is funded solely through donations to events such as the annual Bosom Buddies Walk for Breast Cancer and the annual ViVA for Life event run by ViVA Hair & Spa.
In addition, we would like to gratefully acknowledge the 21st Century Concept Salon and Day Spa and the salon’s many clients for generously donating hair and wigs to help Roswell Park’s chemotherapy patients for more than six years and counting.
