Patient Education Enhanced By "Wizards"
The yellow brick road toward self-help resources is now a lot shorter thanks to your donor dollars. Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Patient Education department recently installed three Wizard computer kiosks, featuring the latest information from the National Cancer Institute in a touch-screen format.
The interactive kiosks and CancerHelp® software were purchased with a $23,000 Quality of Life grant using Roswell Park donations. The Advantage Woodshop of Cheektowaga, New York, donated the design and assembly of the units, which are located on three floors of RPCI.
"Research shows that the more patients can feel in control of their illnesses by becoming active partners in their care, the less anxiety they feel," explained Megan Battaglia, Patient Education Facilitator. "The kiosks assist our patients by providing the most accurate information available to make educated choices."
The Wizards' databases are updated monthly to include information about over 80 types of cancer, their diagnoses, treatments and medications, side effects of treatment, as well as tips on diet, nutrition and support services.
