Compassionate Nursing Honored at Roswell Park
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 2, 2008
Patricia H. Mack, RN, is the 2008 recipient of the Sandra C. Genco Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Ms. Mack has practiced nursing at Roswell Park for nearly 20 years, most recently in the Pediatric Center.
The award is given annually to a Roswell Park nurse for demonstrating compassion and respect for patients’ individual needs and goals. It is named for the late Sandra C. Genco, a longtime volunteer leader for Roswell Park. The Genco family established this award with Roswell Park in 2003.
Ms. Mack was nominated for the honor by the mother of an 11-year-old patient. In her written nomination, the patient’s mother described Ms. Mack as a constant source of compassion, solace and support during her family’s difficult journey through cancer treatment. The patient and his mother joined Ms. Mack’s family, members of the Genco family and Roswell Park leader in presenting Ms. Mack with this honor on August 28, 2008.
About the Sandra C. Genco Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award at Roswell Park
When Sandy Genco passed away in January 2002 from her cancer, there was an outpouring of gifts made in her memory, so her family chose to establish a permanent endowed fund to honor her memory. The fund’s annual distribution is proudly given as an award to a registered nurse at Roswell Park whose work exemplifies the type of caregiving that Sandy and her family received while she was a patient. The winner of this award is selected each year through a competitive nomination process after review of applications sent by patients, family members and faculty and staff at RPCI.
