Summer Research Program for High School Students
Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) offers summer research experiences to students at different levels of their academic development. During a typical summer, 25 high school students participate in programs designed to give them an opportunity to learn and become active participants in cancer research. The Summer of 2010 will be the 58th Anniversary of Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Research Participation Program for Young Scholars. This is a competitive program designed for talented high school students throughout the USA, who will have just completed their junior year (Class of 2011). The program will run from June 28-August 13, 2010. Admitted students must be present for the entire 7-week program.
This program has been offered at RPCI every year since 1953, to provide high ability high school juniors with the opportunity to develop the skills, habits and attitudes needed to conduct scientific research and to assist in career planning. It is also intended to interest participants in pursuing future careers in scientific research, specifically, cancer research.
The major objectives of the program are to:
- Introduce you to scientific research through a project supervised by graduate faculty members.
- Help you develop your own philosophy of science.
- Give you an opportunity to discover and experience the graduate student lifestyle.
- Aid in selecting your undergraduate college major, if you have not already decided on a field of specialization.
Applications are accepted from students who will have completed their junior year in high school (Class of 2011) and have demonstrated a high ability and interest in science. The program is held each summer for seven (7) weeks. Each student works on an independent research project under the guidance of RPCI scientific staff. All students present their research poster during a scientific conference held at the end of the program. All admitted students will be charged a $50 activity fee. There is no tuition fee. However, participants from out of town must either live with family or friends, or at the Canisius College dorm at a cost of $800. The cost of meals is not included in the dormitory fee. The purchase of food and its preparation is the student's responsibility.
Complete applications, including a $10 application fee, must be received by February 16. Applicants should send the fee, application, essay, transcripts and recommendation letter together in one envelope. The transcript should include your Freshman, Sophomore and first marking period of your Junior year grades. Only complete applications will be considered. Those selected will be notified of their status starting in mid-March. In 2009, 26 of 149 applicants were selected by RPCI scientists.
