RPN 506:Professional Practices in Laboratory Management
Time: Fridays, 1:00 - 3:30 PM
Location: Roswell Park Cancer Institute; Research Studies Center, Rm 404
Course objectives: This is a survey course, intended to provide an appreciation for and basic applicable knowledge of the responsibilities, roles, policies and laws involved in managing a scientific research laboratory in both the academic and private sector.
By the end of this course the student will:
- Obtain a working knowledge of the tasks and roles handled by a scientific laboratory manager
- Gain knowledge of the laws and policies governing human resources
- Obtain applicable legal knowledge of health and safety policies governing laboratory research
- Gain experience generating grant budgets
- Observe laboratory operations at a private scientific research facility
Planned field trips:
On specified dates in the schedule, field trips will be planned to tour the facilities of local scientific research laboratories. These tours will include meeting with the facility's director of scientific research for a question/answer period.
Course evaluation:
Class participants will be evaluated upon attendance and successful completion of in-class assignments. Please refer to the website schedule and click on "Assignments" to the left of the scheduled class to obtain a copy of the assignment a week in advance of the class.
