FAQs
Is the Roswell Park Cancer Institute a university?
Roswell Park is a comprehensive cancer center with scientists and physicians who are faculty members of the University at Buffalo (SUNY). As a graduate division of UB, our students are also UB students with degrees granted by the State University of New York.
How far is the Institute from the UB north and south campuses?
RPCI is located downtown, about 4 miles from the south (biomedical science campus) and 8 miles from the north (Amherst) campus.
Where are courses taught?
As an RPCI student, your coursework may be scheduled at the institute or at the north and south campuses, with your research accomplished at Roswell.
What’s the weather like?
Western New York State has four distinct seasons similar to New England and the Midwest. Fall brings the bright colors of hardwood foliage, Buffalo Bills football and the beginning of a new Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and professional theater season.
Winter allows residents to enjoy all types of snow and ice sports, the Buffalo Sabres hockey club and indoor activities around ski lodge fireplaces. We know snow and how to handle it!
Spring is a time for the awakening of our Olmstead-designed park system, Buffalo Bison
baseball and your return to outdoor jogging.
Summer on the Great Lakes is a joy. Not too hot, not too humid -- just right! Dining on outdoor patios, mingled with the lively downtown club scene or on the Niagara River, lets graduate students unwind from research activities. Shakespeare in Delaware Park is a mid-summer night’s dream.
Where do graduate students live?
Most graduate students choose an off-campus living style with very reasonable rents and residential locations. The average "commuting time" to the institute or other UB campuses is 15 minutes. A fast, safe alternative to car transportation is the light rail subway system. If you choose to live on campus, new apartment-style complexes are now ready for graduate students and those with families.
Do I need to take the GRE subject test?
Master degree applicants need only the general GRE or MCAT tests. Doctoral applicants from the USA are recommended to take a subject test, with international students required to take a GRE subject test. Doctoral applicants from the USA, Canada and the UK have the option to take the GRE subject test or not.
