The long range goal of the research program in the Department of Immunology is to determine whether:

• the limited efficacy of immunotheraphy of malignant diseases is caused by the escape mechanisms utilized by tumor cells to avoid immune recognition and destruction and
• whether development of strategies to counteract the escape mechanisms utilized by tumor cells will improve the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapy of malignant diseases.
